A vocal-instrumental form of music based on the pentatonic scale and a characteristic twelve-bar progression. Blues evolved from African-American, shouts, work songs, and chants that had their earliest stylistic roots in West Africa. Blues had a major influence on later American and Western music in general. Numerous musical genres are inspired by the blues, refer to it, or grew out of it.
