Drum and bass (also written as drum ‘n’ bass or drum & bass, D&B, D+B, DnB or D’n’B) is a type of electronic music that emerged in the mid-1990s. The genre is characterized by fast beats (usually between 160–180 beats per minute), with heavy basslines. Drum and bass originated as an offshoot of the early 1990s British rave scene from the jungle style. Over the first decade of its existence, the incorporation of elements from various musical genres led to many permutations in its overall style.
